Beyond the Bell: What Does Learning Look Like at Tara International?
When prospective parents visit our campus in Gangtok, one of the most common questions they ask is, “So, what does a typical day look like for a student?” It’s a fantastic question, because a day at Tara International looks quite different from what many of us remember from our own school days.
There is no jarring school bell. Instead, the day flows with a natural rhythm, honouring the child’s focus and energy. Let’s walk through a day together.
Morning Work Cycle (The Heart of the Day)
After a calm and mindful arrival, students enter their “prepared environment.” This is the core of the Montessori day—a long, uninterrupted block of time for deep engagement.
What you would see:
- A six-year-old might be carefully laying out golden beads to understand the decimal system, experiencing the concept of ‘one thousand’ in their hands.
- A younger child might be absorbed in the ‘Pink Tower’, developing their visual discrimination and fine motor skills.
- An older student could be researching the unique biodiversity of Sikkim for a project, using our curated library and resources.
- In a quiet corner, a small group receives a new lesson from their guide (our term for teacher) on sentence analysis or the parts of a plant.
Children are not all doing the same thing at the same time. They are engaged in purposeful work they have chosen. This freedom, within clear limits of respect for others and the environment, builds incredible concentration, self-discipline, and time management skills.
Community Lunch and Outdoor Exploration
Lunch is a community affair. Children help with setting up and cleaning up, learning practical life skills and grace.
Afterwards, we move into our second classroom: nature. We don’t believe in locking children indoors. The crisp mountain air and open spaces are essential for their well-being. This might involve:
- Nature Walks: Identifying local flora and fauna on our campus trails.
- Free Play: Running, climbing, and imaginative games that develop gross motor skills and social collaboration.
- Gardening: Tending to our school’s vegetable patch, learning firsthand about life cycles and where food comes from.
Afternoon: Specialised and Creative Pursuits
The afternoon is often reserved for creative arts, music, language studies, and physical education. It’s a time for collaborative projects and expressing the knowledge they’ve absorbed in new ways. The day ends as it began—with a moment of quiet reflection, gratitude, and tidying up our shared space, reinforcing the sense of responsibility and community.
A day at Tara International is a beautiful balance of individual focus and community collaboration, academic rigour and creative joy, all wrapped in the tranquil embrace of nature.
